A man was arrested after stealing a bag of human ashes in East Nashville. His family thinks that he may have thought the bag was filled with cocaine.
The police report says, William “Billy” Cantrell went over to his grandmother’s home after stealing and Xbox and the bag of ashes from a nearby house. His grandmother Wanda Allen says that Billy didn’t seem like he was sober at the time of the incident, “If he gets to drinking and doing drugs he’s out there. He needs helps. There needs to be more to it than putting him in jail”.
The ashes belonged to neighbor Steven Medley and the remains were of his mother.
Medley’s belongings were recovered, and the bag still had the original tie and had never been opened, “On top of it, it had a white piece of paper taped over it with date of birth, date of death, name and the funeral home” says Allen.
